The mother of a 3-year-old child and a male family member were arrested on suspicion of child abuse in unincorporated San Bernardino after the child was hospitalized with multiple injuries, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday, June 11.

On Sunday, June 9 shortly before 12 p.m., deputies responded to a report of an assault on the 6500 block of Pradera Avenue, where the 28-year-old male family member told authorities he was physically assaulted by another man during a drug deal. He also told authorities the man had entered the child’s bedroom and also assaulted the child, who was not inside the residence when deputies arrived.

Around the same time, the child was admitted to the emergency room by their 26-year-old mother and was found suffering from  injuries to the head, chest, back, arms, legs and genitals, the Sheriff’s Department said.

During the investigation it was determined that the man who assaulted the family member did not injure the child. It was later discovered that the mother had abandoned the child six weeks prior with the male family member, who is believed to have inflicted mental and physical abuse to the child during that period, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Details on how the mother wound up with the child after initially abandoning them were not released. The child was taken into custody of the San Bernardino County Department of Children and Family Services. The child’s condition was reported as stable.

Deputies arrested the mother on suspicion of child abuse and child abandonment, while the male family member was arrested on suspicion of torture, child abuse and false imprisonment, authorities said.
