UPDATED:

Five people were hospitalized, two of them in critical condition, after a food truck exploded in Whittier on Saturday morning, July 20, authorities said.

Los Angeles County firefighters were called to the 6700 block of Greenleaf Avenue just past 9:15 a.m. on a report of an explosion, said Robert Diaz, a dispatch supervisor.

The food truck was believed to be sitting in front of a coffee business, Diaz said.

In addition to the two people with critical wounds, two others had moderate injuries and another had minor ones, Diaz said.

All five were characterized as having burns, Whittier Police Lt. Brenna Dineen said.

Investigators looked into the explosion and deemed it accidental, Dineen said.

“We don’t know exactly how it was caused, but it was some sort of fire inside of the truck, possibly caused by a propane tank,” she said. “We don’t suspect anything criminal at this time.”

Additional information was not immediately available.
