Redlands first In-N-Out Burger opened to a steady stream of customers in its dining room and drive-thru on Thursday, Aug. 1.

The restaurant’s regular staff of about 80 people was beefed up to about 100 with employees from nearby locations. Among them were people in white uniforms with red aprons directing traffic into and through the parking lot.

The restaurant is at 1301 W. Lugonia Ave., just feet within Redlands city limits. Construction began last fall on an undeveloped 2.13-acre lot next to the 210-freeway.

“We were lucky to get this spot,” said Mike Cowan, vice president of operations for the Irvine-based chain.

The restaurant began taking orders before the doors officially opened at 10:30 a.m.

Staff members noticed the first car in the drive-thru at 3 a.m., but it didn’t stay long. The first classic car, which was turquoise and white, went through the drive-thru at 10 a.m. In-N-Out, , was an innovator in drive-thru service and is all about Southern California car culture.

At about the same time William Crum, operator of a drive-thru across the street, brought over a welcoming bouquet.

This In-N-Out’s features include an illuminated sign on a 95-foot pole, six charging stations for electric vehicles and the chain’s signature crossed palm trees, which are at the eastern entrance.

For the occasion, In-N-Out set up a tent selling branded merchandise.

Openings have kept In-N-Out busy. Redlands was its second within a week. The other one was in the on Friday, July 26.

Before that, a new In-N-Out opened in on May 31.
