Here, you can visit still-standing hotels frequented by legendary U.S. presidents, a cathedral-like giant sequoia grove, and miles of accessible, pet-friendly trails, all in the same day. And, with a little local knowledge and a lot of wanderlust, you can get up close and personal with the best of the season (and the best of Yosemite National Park).

Yosemite History Center

Cross the covered bridge and travel to a time long since passed at the first stop on our hunt: Wawona’s . Here, Mother Nature and humankind live side by side: rustic cabins, a blacksmith’s shop, and even a jail are ripe for exploring against a backdrop of fresh spring greenery. Brush up on your National Parks knowledge, get the scoop on nearby Southern Yosemite landmarks, and visit the Chinese Laundry building to learn about the immigrant workers who helped develop the park as a destination.

Chilnualna Falls

is another Mariposa County gem and the prize waiting at the end of a challenging 8.2 mile hike. Spring marks peak flow for this trio of waterfalls, so don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, all-day hike if you’re in Yosemite this time of year. Be cautious and don’t get too close to the stream – when the water is high, it’s also fast, and the granite can get slippery.

The Redwoods in Yosemite

For a well-earned rest, lie down next to Yosemite’s sleeping giants at , a collection of 125 cozy cabins minutes from the Grove. With pet-friendly lodging and a new events venue, The Redwoods in Yosemite is a gathering place for friends, family and adventurers with convenient access to the best of Southern Yosemite.

Wawona Meadow

Your next scavenger hunt destination is , the perfect place to stretch your legs and work on your swing. But don’t be fooled. Though the golf course might seem like the most extraordinary part of this trail, the real treasures are the heaps of wildflowers you’ll find along the edges of the meadow. Explore on foot or by bike, or even alongside a furry friend; dogs are welcome!

Don’t forget to visit – a collection of bright, Victorian-era buildings surrounded by endless green mountains. Opened in 1879, this historic hotel hosted former president Ulysses S. Grant. Today, it’s an activity hub for travelers (and the perfect place to fuel up in spring and summer). Most importantly, it’s just around the corner from the next larger-than-life stop on your spring scavenger hunt.

 Mariposa Grove

You might feel as though you’re walking in a cathedral here, but rest assured you’re still in the greatest outdoors of all: the in Yosemite. Over 500 mature specimens, some close to 3,000 years old, live quietly here at the edge of the park’s South Entrance. On foot or horseback, the hiking here will bring you up close and personal with titans like Fallen Monarch, Grizzly Giant, and the famous California Tunnel Tree.

Skyline: How long have you been in the fair industry, and what got you into it?

Charlie: 37 years. My father and I are first generation Americans, and he bought a grocery store in San Diego. I worked day, and night, but one day I saw an ad on TV for the San Diego Fair. I said to my dad, let me go work at the fair and call it my vacation just to get away from the store for a little bit. I was 14 years old, and I went and worked at the fair. I met a fellow that I ended up working for named Robert Jackson. He sold charbroiled corn, and baked potatoes at the fair. I worked for him for 12 summers while I went to school. Junior High, High School through College. After graduating I made the decision that instead of going into law enforcement, which is what I studied for, I changed last minute and decided to buy my own trailer. It just so happened to be a broasted chicken trailer.

Skyline: What spawned the idea for the fried Oreo?

Charlie: One of my favorite things on earth is going to McDonald’s and buying a Big Mac, and their apple pie. I was telling my brother one day that we don’t have dessert. We have fried chicken. I went to the Hostess rack at 7-11 and bought one of everything. My brother happened to have a box of Oreos at home. I fried those too, and I liked those the best.

Skyline: What’s new for this year’s menu?

Charlie: I made a funnel cake that’s about four inches in diameter, mimicking a bun, and since I’m , we fried the chicken breast, and I dressed it in a hot honey sauce. So this year, I’ll be serving a hot honey funnel cake chicken sandwich.

Island Tales: Where Legends Come to Life

Before we dive headfirst into our Catalina escapade, let’s take a moment to uncover the island’s rich history. Long before tourists flocked to its shores, the Tongva people called this island home, cradling its secrets and treasures. They lovingly referred to it as “Pimu” or “Pimugna,” and their legacy still whispers through the rustling palms.

In the late 19th century, Catalina found itself on the cusp of transformation when George Shatto, a visionary real estate speculator from Grand Rapids, Michigan, acquired the island for $200,000 (equivalent to $6.7 million today) from the Lick estate during the Southern California real estate boom in 1887. Shatto would create the settlement that would become Avalon. His dream was to develop a bustling resort community and he laid the groundwork by building the town’s first hotel, the original Hotel Metropole, and a pier.

However, despite Shatto’s ambitious efforts, he encountered financial difficulties and defaulted on his loan after just a few years, leading to the island’s return to the Lick estate. It was during this turbulent period that the Banning brothers, sons of Phineas Banning, entered the scene. They bought the island from the Lick estate in 1891 and committed themselves to fulfilling Shatto’s vision by constructing numerous tourist facilities.

And let’s not forget that Avalon’s history, like any grand tale, has its share of challenges. On November 29, 1915, a devastating fire ravaged half of Avalon, reducing six hotels and several clubs to ashes.

Coupled with the decline in tourism due to World War I, the Banning brothers found themselves grappling with staggering debt. In 1919, they were left with no choice but to relinquish their hold on the island, selling it in shares.

However, the real game-changer for Catalina came when chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., swept in to purchase the . Yes, you heard that right! Wrigley’s arrival heralded an era of transformation and growth. He invested millions, brought the Chicago Cubs to the island for spring training, and created the iconic Catalina Casino (and no, it’s not what you’re thinking!) that we will be exploring a little later.
