The Grammy-winning crooner appeared alongside his wife, Kari, and Bob Mayer III, president of the Mayer Corporation, owners of the Waterfront Beach Resort, for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“When you go to the beach, you lug all this (stuff) with you,” he said. “Coolers and ice that weighs a 150 pounds. You bring your own barbecues. You sit and work all day at the beach. Well, you don’t have to do that anymore. Just come in a bathing suit and a towel.”

A handful of local notables joined Hagar at today’s private ceremony, including Huntington Beach economic development manager Kriss Casanova and city council members Tony Strickland, Dan Kalmick, Rhonda Bolton and Casey McKeon.

Reflecting on his life and his work in the restaurant business, Hagar joked, “I’ve been a so-called rockstar my whole life. A lot of people don’t trust rockstars. They think we’re just flakey people who do drugs and just get in trouble. Well, we do that too but some of us have good intentions.”

Klatch Coffee partners with Sprouts to open cafes inside supermarkets /2024/05/17/klatch-coffee-partners-with-sprouts-to-open-cafes-inside-supermarkets/ Fri, 17 May 2024 20:48:10 +0000 /?p=4302263&preview=true&preview_id=4302263 Klatch Coffee will soon be serving breakfast, snacks and its own beverages inside Sprouts Farmers Market.

The Rancho Cucamonga-based roaster is partnering with the Phoenix-based supermarket chain to open cafes within five of its more than 60 grocery stores in Southern California.

The first cafe, in Fontana, will celebrate its grand opening Friday, May 24 through Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. The store is at 16964 S. Highland Ave. in the Highland Village shopping center.

Cafes in Redlands, Rancho Cucamonga, Eastvale and Fullerton stores are expected to follow in coming months.

“We’ve always had the philosophy of meeting our customers where they are. The idea of putting a Klatch where you’re grocery shopping, making your life a little bit easier, makes a lot of sense for what we do,” Heather Perry, chief executive officer of the coffee company, said in a phone interview. It was , Mike Perry and Cindy Perry, in 1993.

Klatch already has seven cafes in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. The Sprouts partnership will nearly double the list and add a presence in Orange and Riverside counties as well.

To make room for the coffee shops, Klatch is repurposing public seating areas that were available to customers to relax or eat their grab-and-go purchases.

Those rooms tend to be underutilized, according to Steve Lamontagne, vice president of portfolio optimization.

“We want our stores to be as productive as they can,” he said in a separate phone interview.

The cafes are a pilot program that began a year ago in Arizona with a partnership with Press Coffee, also based in Phoenix.

Sprouts set up five Press coffee shops in its home state and went looking for a local partner for five additional coffee shops in Southern California. Lamontagne said that Sprouts was impressed by Klatch’s commitment to direct trade with coffee growers.

Sprouts reached out to Klatch about a year ago, according to Perry, and began stocking its whole bean blends in March.

She said the Sprouts cafes would be staffed by Klatch employees and provide the same experience as its own cafes, with about 90% of the menu.

But Klatch cafes will also have Klatch exclusives, Perry said. During the opening weekend celebration in Fontana, it will be serving a dalgona coffee created for Klatch’s 30th anniversary celebration last fall.

Dalgona, or whipped, coffee is a trendy, Instagram-friendly beverage that comes from Macau or South Korea and is made with coffee, sugar and a hand mixer. The Klatch version is named Smudgepot after heaters once used to avoid frost damage in citrus orchards.

“Oranges and orange groves are a huge part of Southern California culture,” said Perry. “What we did for this drink, we took off on the dalgona trend. We take espresso and cold brew and orange blossom water and orange extract and syrup and put in a nitrous canister and whip it so its super-light and serve it on a base of oat milk. It’s light and refreshing and orangey.”

The first 25 customers to purchase a Smudgepot each day during Memorial Day weekend will get a free Klatch Coffee glass can, and the first 50 customers on Saturday will get a Sprouts reusable shopping bag, the news release said.

Another exclusive will be Berry Ricotta Toast, made with seasonal berries and local honey on artisan bread, according to a news release.

“Sprouts is very local within the communities they operate,” said Lamontagne. “Klatch has been rooted in the communities where they operate for the last 30 years. They take their business very seriously and really, really focus on their customers. It’s really that blend. I can’t stress enough how the partnership comes together and how we make sure that works. We could partner with any of the big coffee companies out there, but that’s not the way Sprouts goes to market.”

Perry had a similar thought.

“We’re treating these just like Klatch cafes. There’s no difference in our minds.”

Two Mexico restaurants, lauded by Michelin at a ceremony in Mexico City this week, have chefs who also operate spots in Southern California — Carlos Gaytán, whose in Quintana Roo received one star, and Roberto Alcocer, whose in Baja California landed on the recommended restaurants list.

“I am deeply grateful to God, my family, and my team for the incredible culinary projects we have undertaken, which have allowed me to earn a Michelin star in the United States and now in my birth country, Mexico,” said Gaytán, in a written statement. “Achieving this would not be possible without the teamwork and dedication behind our great restaurants, previously with Mexique and now with HA’. This recognition is a testament to our passion and commitment to excellence.”

A trio of new restaurant concepts featuring cuisine by chef Carlos Gaytán (, Centrico and Tiendit) . Gaytan previously was awarded a Michelin star for his Chicago restaurant Mexique in 2013, becoming the first Mexican-born chef to receive the honor.

Six eateries were given green-star status (issued to places demonstrating sustainable and eco-friendly practices); 42 restaurants landed on the Bib Gourmand list, a rating that recognizes establishments that serve good food at reasonable prices; and 97 places earned recommended restaurant status.

No restaurant received three stars, the celestial guide’s highest honor.

“It’s a huge honor because we have been working so hard for the last 11 years,” said Alcocer, whose Malva opened in 2013. “While it wasn’t what we were expecting, we are still pleased. I can compared both places and think, ‘Malva has better food, but the service at Valle is better,’ but both places are great and I’m happy.”

“Mexico is a really rich country gastronomically-speaking,” added Alcocer. “When something like Michelin comes to Mexico, it helps validate to the world what we’re doing, even though they didn’t do the whole country.”

Taquería El Califa de León, located in Mexico City, has the distinction of being the first taqueria ever to win a Michelin sparkler, earning one star. “This humble taqueria in Mexico City’s San Rafael neighborhood has been in business for more than 70 years, and for good reason. They’re best known for their signature gaonera taco, an item our Michelin Inspectors took special note of during their multiple visits,” .

Michelin Guide inspectors follow the following criteria when assessing restaurant for inclusion: The quality of ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, personality of the chef as expressed in the dining experience and consistency both across the entire menu and over time. after Harris’ death. The Associated Press sent an email seeking comment Thursday to the Hershey Co., which owns Paqui.

The cause of death was determined on Feb. 27, and the death certificate was released to the city clerk’s office on March 5, according to Elaine Driscoll, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

The Paqui chip, sold individually for about $10, came wrapped in foil in a coffin-shaped box containing the warning that it was intended for the “vengeful pleasure of intense heat and pain.” The warning noted that the chip was for adult consumption only, and should be kept out of the reach of children.

Despite the warning, children have had no problem buying the chips. There have been reports from around the country of teens who have gotten sick after taking part in the chip-eating challenge, including three who were sent to a hospital. Paramedics were called to a Minnesota school in 2022 when seven students fell ill after taking part in the challenge.

Dine Latino Restaurant Week highlights Latin America’s foodie hotspots /2024/05/15/dine-latino-restaurant-week-highlights-latin-americas-foodie-hotspots/ Wed, 15 May 2024 21:25:13 +0000 /?p=4299726&preview=true&preview_id=4299726 The Latino Restaurant Association is helping to with its DINE Latino Restaurant Week from May 14-19.

In its third year, the event is part of the Los Angeles-based association’s restaurant program, which aims to spotlight delicious foods from South America, Central America, Mexico, and the islands of the Caribbean. This week, more than 100 restaurants across the cities of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside counties are participating, with offerings including Nativo’s Plato De Milanesa and Chamo Venezuelan’s Pollo a la Plancha.

During a phone interview, Lilly Rocha, CEO of the Latino Restaurant Association, said that the idea of promoting Latino restaurant owners this way came during the coronavirus pandemic, which heavily impacted the hospitality industry.

“We’re doing it as a way to share our rich cultural food history and also to let the general public know that there’s lots of different amazing Latin cuisines,” Rocha said. “For example, Mexico has many different regions with different cuisines. Here in LA, we represent not just the states of Mexico but also other Latin countries like Colombia and Ecuador. As a community, we’re excited to work together and to promote each other.”

The restaurants featured in Latino Restaurant Week are not hand-picked or charged to participate. Instead, the group reaches out to its community members, inviting them to participate. The group’s mission as a nonprofit is to promote Latin eateries and get customers in their establishments by creating promotional graphics, special menus, and social media campaigns to prepare them for this week. Rocha said the promotions are also meant to get foodies out of their cultural comfort zones.

“I hope people try something new, maybe a different type of cuisine,” she said. “I know we all have our favorites, but we’re hoping people will go out and try something new and see how wonderful it is.”

Here are five restaurants participating in this year’s Latino Restaurant Week that showcase the different flavors of the Latin diaspora. To see all the eateries and get more information about each restaurant, visit.

Recipe: Here’s how to slow roast vine-on tomatoes /2024/05/14/recipe-heres-how-to-slow-roast-vine-on-tomatoes/ Tue, 14 May 2024 17:03:06 +0000 /?p=4298038&preview=true&preview_id=4298038 Nancy Silverton, chef-restaurateur and cookbook author, slow-roasts tomatoes to perfection. She uses small, on-the-vine tomatoes and slow roasts the colorful orbs slathered with extra-virgin olive oil. Their skins shrivel but the tomatoes remain plump.

There are myriad ways to serve them. Once cooled, the room-temp, stem-on tomatoes can sit atop a generous mound of rich fresh burrata cheese that is graced with coarse salt and a smidgen of basil pesto.

I also like to serve them atop cooked store-bought ravioli that has been tossed with olive oil or lemon olive oil and minced fresh herbs (such as basil and parsley), seasoned with salt and freshly ground black pepper. I garnish the dish with slivers of pitted kalamata olives.

Slow-Roasted Vine-On Tomatoes

Yield: About 36 tomatoes

INGREDIENTS

16 ounces small vine-on tomatoes, such as Campari tomatoes, or cherry tomatoes, preferably on the stems; see cook’s notes

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Cook’s notes: The Campari brand tomatoes on the stem are bigger than a cherry tomato, but smaller than a small standard tomato; I buy them at my local Albertson’s supermarket. Sometimes there are cherry tomatoes sold with the stems intact. I grow cherry tomatoes that I plant in May; they provide me with stem-on tomatoes all summer long.

DIRECTIONS

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 300 degrees.

2. Place a wire rack on top of a baking sheet. Gently lift tomatoes out of boxes, taking care to keep tomatoes attached to stems as much as possible and place on rack. Brush tomatoes with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast in preheated oven until skins are shriveled but tomatoes are still plump, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Remove tomatoes from oven and allow them to cool to room temperature. Use tomatoes, or cover with plastic wrap and store at room temperature for up to one day or refrigerate up to three days. Bring tomatoes to room temperature before serving.
