The Los Angeles County coroner identified a San Bernardino teenager who police say barged into a Long Beach home holding a replica handgun last month, which led to a standoff in the home’s backyard, .

Brandon Salgado, 17, died at a hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to his chest on Friday, April 26, according to the coroner’s office.

Salgado, police and one of the home’s residents said, entered a house in the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue that night, then pointed the replica gun at three people inside while demanding valuables from them.

Salgado later jumped out of a window to get to the backyard, where he was cornered by arriving officers. Police spoke to Salgado for more than an hour attempting to get him to surrender. But as a SWAT team arrived, one of the officers fired a single shot at Salgado, hitting him. The teenager was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Both the California Attorney General and the L.A. County District Attorney’s offices are investigating the shooting. The state Attorney General’s office regularly investigates shootings by police that kill unarmed civilians.

Long Beach police said the officers who cornered Salgado were wearing body cameras. Officials said they would release footage of the shooting to the public.

Long Beach police identified Salgado by his age and city of residence, but had refused to give his name.

Long Beach police said a second person believed to be involved in the home robbery — Iskay Mota, 18, of Modesto — was arrested Thursday, May 2.

Police have not said how they believe Mota was involved, only describing him as an accomplice who fled before officers arrived.

A resident said he was inside the house when someone broke down his door using “a crowbar and a hammer.”
