A contracted Caltrans worker was killed and two other crew members injured on Monday, May 6, in a traffic collision on the northbound 71 Freeway in the Chino Hills area, officials said.

Around 8:35 a.m., north of Euclid Avenue, a 34-year-old man from Pomona, driving a Peterbilt box truck, drifted to the right, sideswiping a Ford Transit van parked on the right shoulder.

The truck then veered further right, crashing through the metal guardrail as seven Caltrans-contracted crew members worked behind it, striking two.

One, a 54-year-old man from San Bernardino, was killed. A second crew-member, a 36-year-old man from San Bernardino, was hospitalized with major injuries.

The van’s driver, an eighth Caltrans-contracted worker, was hospitalized with minor injuries, according to a collision report.

Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in the crash. No arrests had been made.
