Re 鈥淯rbanist鈥檚 dreams foiled by big-city governments鈥 (Sept. 8): In California, labor unions, specifically the public sector, donate abundant amounts of money to legislators who in turn deliver the legislation they desire. If they didn鈥檛 do this, they would be derelict in their fiduciary duties to their membership as they were handed a tool to use by a very conservative Supreme Court in 2010.聽 The Citizens United 5 to 4 ruling, (the five were all appointed by Republican presidents) granted 1st Amendment free speech rights to unlimited political contributions for corporations, labor unions and other associations.聽 Congress could legislate this […]
