Margot Dornin Varden OBITUARY

Margot Dornin Varden died peacefully on February 15, 2024. She was born in Annapolis, MD on November 21, 1937. As the daughter of a career naval officer, her childhood was spent in various cities including Key West, FL; Norfolk and Alexandria, VA; Newport, RI; and Washington, D.C. Margot graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. and from Hollins College in Roanoke, VA. She then moved to San Francisco where she worked as an assistant to Congressman John Allen. In 1959, she joined the staff of Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Inc. in San Francisco, serving as administrative assistant to Gordon P. Smith, vice president and manager of the firm’s West Coast operations. In 1962, she married Arthur E. Varden, Jr. in Monterey, CA and they lived in San Francisco until moving to San Bernardino, CA in 1967. Margot earned her teaching credential at Cal State San Bernardino. She taught in the GATE Program and later was a substitute teacher for the San Bernardino Unified School District. She was a secretary for the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health from 1989-2010.Community involvement was important to Margot. She was both a Brownie and Girl Scout leader; president of Lawyers’ Wives of San Bernardino County; president of Assistance League of San Bernardino; chairman of Christmas Tree Lane for Santa Claus, Inc.; a patron of the San Bernardino City Library Foundation, and a member of National Charity League along with her daughters. She had attended St. John’s Episcopal Church since 1967.Predeceased by her husband in 1997, Margot is survived by her two daughters: Kate Oravez of Denver and Lane Ceric (Enes) of Oakland, CA, as well as her granddaughter Margot Oravez and her grandson Ismet Ceric. She is also survived by her twin sister Marcia Schoettle (Mike) of Rolling Hills, CA, and her sister-in-law Rosemary Howes of Medford, OR. No service is planned at this time.
