Two drivers were arrested Saturday, April 20, after they peeled out from a large gathering of cars in San Bernardino and one was abetted by people on foot who blocked a deputy’s path, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

One was a 25-year-old resident of Riverside and the other was an 18-year-old resident of San Bernardino.

The crimes happened around 10:15 p.m. at the intersection of Hospitality Lane and Tippecanoe Avenue. Deputies from the Central station in the city saw about 200 cars in a parking lot.

“The deputies observed a driver … in a silver BMW, exit the parking lot at a high rate of speed, causing the vehicle to lose traction and momentarily veer out of control, endangering a group of 10-15 pedestrians who were in close proximity,” a news release said.

That driver, from Riverside, did not get away even though a deputy “encountered resistance from pedestrians who obstructed the patrol unit’s path,” the release said. He was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving.

The other driver similarly skidded as he tried to drive away. He was arrested on suspicion of evading a peace officer after a short pursuit, the release said.

Both cars were impounded.
